Birch Luxe Natural Mattress review – eco-luxury at its finest

Two nightstands either side of the Birch Luxe Natural Mattress against a white wall.

The Birch Luxe Natural Mattress proves that you don't have to sacrifice your comfort for your conscience. Filled with natural latex and topped with organic wool, cotton, and cashmere, this mattress looks and feels premium.

Before I started testing the Birch Luxe Natural Mattress, I was sleeping on their standard model, the Birch Natural. I didn't think that that bed could get much better but I can confirm that the Birch Luxe Natural Mattress brings plush comfort to the next level. Upgrades include lumbar support for body contouring, enhanced edge support, and a cooling cotton cover.

As an H&G sleep expert, I'm part of the search to find the world's best mattress. The Birch Luxe Natural Mattress ticks all my boxes, but I can't ignore the cost. I tested this bed through fall and winter to work out whether it's worth the price.

Birch Luxe Natural Mattress review

Believe it or not, this luxury bed is a box mattress. All those spring coils and latex layers get vacuum packed into a neat little box, but they still weigh a ton. I had to ask my husband to help me get the mattress inside. Once upstairs, the Birch Luxe Natural Mattress was easy to unwrap and inflated quickly: we started sleeping on it that same night.

Who would the Birch Luxe Natural Mattress suit?

  • Eco-conscious shoppers: Birch only uses natural and organic materials, ethically sourced, for their beds. The Birch Luxe Natural Mattress is GREENGUARD Gold certified free from toxic chemicals, eco-INSTITUT certified safe for sleep, and Fair Trade certified for safe, sustainable factory conditions. You won't find any fiberglass or flame retardants in this latex mattress: only organic wool as a natural fire repellent.
  • Hot sleepers: I suffer from night sweats and hot flashes. The heat retention of my old memory foam mattress is what prompted me to try the Birch Luxe Natural Mattress, a hybrid mattress, which is known to sleep cooler.
  • Anyone who shares a bed: the Birch Luxe Natural Mattress offers excellent motion isolation and medium-firm support to suit all sleep positions.
  • Shoppers with money to spare: the Birch Luxe Natural Mattress is one of the best luxury mattresses on the market. The stitching is beautiful and the bed feels like the sort of thing you'd find in a high-end hotel or luxury spa.

What's it like to sleep on the Birch Luxe Natural Mattress?

  • Comfort and support: as a stomach and side sleeper (I switch between the two in the night), I found the Birch Luxe Natural Mattress felt incredibly comfortable in either position. It's a lot more supportive than my old memory foam mattress: my hips don't sink as far into the surface, which puts less strain on my lower back. With that said, it's not overly firm, either: the plush top layers of organic wool and cashmere give it a softness that's instantly cozy.
  • Breathability and cooling: like I said, the Birch Luxe Natural Mattress is noticeably cooler than my old memory foam mattress. That's thanks in part to the coil base, which circulates air through the mattress every time the coils compress and depress beneath my body weight. The materials help, too: cotton, cashmere, and wool are natural thermoregulators, and wool has the added benefit of being hygroscopic, which means it absorbs humidity. I'd put the Birch Luxe Natural Mattress up there with the best cooling mattresses.

  • Motion isolation: I sleep next to my husband, who stands more than six foot tall, so motion isolation is important for me. This is one area where the Birch Luxe Natural Mattress truly shines. Each spring coil is individually pocketed, so when you apply pressure to one coil, it doesn't affect any of the others. Pair that with the movement-absorbing latex layer and you've got a great motion isolator on your hands.
  • Edge support: this is another major difference between hybrid vs memory foam mattresses. With the Birch Luxe Natural Mattress, I could comfortably sit and lie on the side of the mattress. Birch claims that their Luxe Natural Mattress has better edge support than their standard model, but I can't claim to notice a huge difference between the two.
  • Sleep trial: the Birch Luxe Natural Mattress comes with a 100-night mattress sleep trial. That doesn't leave you much time to test your mattress through multiple seasons before you need to commit to your purchase. The Avocado Green Mattress offers organic materials and firmer support at a similar price to the Birch Luxe Natural Mattress, plus a 365-night sleep trial, if you're keen to try before you buy.
  • Warranty: the Birch Luxe Natural Mattress comes with a 25-year mattress warranty that covers manufacturing defects. Obviously, that doesn't sound quite as impressive as a lifetime warranty, but it's much more realistic: I doubt you'll use your Birch Luxe Natural Mattress for an entire quarter of a century.

How does the Birch Luxe Natural Mattress rate online?

The Birch Luxe Natural Mattress has a 4.4 average star rating from 224 reviews on the Birch site. Happy customers praise the comfort and breathability of the bed, as well as its top-notch eco-credentials.

Opinion is split as to the feel of the mattress: some customers complain that the Birch Luxe Natural Mattress is too firm, while others say it feels too soft. Firmness is such a subjective thing and I can only speak to my own experience when I say I loved the plush comfort of the Birch Luxe Natural Mattress.

Should I buy the Birch Luxe Natural Mattress?

I couldn't review the Birch Luxe Natural Mattress without mentioning the price. At full price, a Queen goes for $2,623.80: even a Twin costs more than $1,600. You could always try to bag a bargain in the mattress sales, but this bed is still on the more expensive side.

Still, you get what you pay for, and the Birch Luxe Natural Mattress brings organic materials, plush comfort, and a long list of eco certifications. It excels across the board for breathability, support, and comfort. If you can afford it, you won't find much better than the Birch Luxe Natural Mattress.

How we test mattresses

(Image credit: Future / Kaitlin Madden)

We put a lot of thought into how we test mattresses. Our expert testers sleep on beds for months, ideally as the seasons change, to get a sense of how the bed performs over time, with a special focus on thermoregulation. We assess each mattress against the same criteria: comfort; support; cooling properties; motion isolation; edge support; and weight bearing capacity.

Some of our tests are subjective. The most meaningful way to measure the comfort and support of a mattress is to spend a few night sleeping on it and see how we feel. Others are more scientific: for example, we use weights and water glasses to measure the motion isolation of a mattress. We also consider the practicalities of purchase, from mattress sleep trials and warranties to delivery details.

Where possible, we compare our findings against verified customer reviews to give a fuller picture of what it might be like to sleep on this mattress. Finally, we bring it all back to the price of the product to help you determine value for money.
