BFI identifies reasons behind Olympic setback

NEW DELHI: Lack of fitness, inadequate defensive capabilities and psychological fragility have been identified as main factors that led to Indian pugilists' subpar performance at the Paris Olympics. This came up at the review meeting conducted by the Boxing Federation of India (BFI) at its Gurugram headquarters.

The special general meeting, attended by BFI's executive hierarchy, scrutinised the disappointing campaign where none of the six participating boxers secured medals. Nishant Dev emerged as the sole bright prospect, displaying remarkable tenacity in a closely contested bout against Mexico's Marco Verde in the men's 71kg quarters.

The executive committee members attributed the underwhelming performance to BFI's insufficient strategic planning, excessive reliance on international expertise, diminished confidence in domestic coaches, and implementation of a contentious evaluation assessment protocol at national camps.

During deliberations over the disputed evaluation system, vice presidents Rajesh Bhandari (North Zone) and Jaslal Pradhan (East) vehemently opposed its continuation, culminating in a decision to reinstate the trial-based selection process.

Consensus emerged on the incompatibility of European coaching techniques, noting the excessive emphasis on defensive positioning and orthodox approach. The federation advocated the need for incorporating aggressive tactics, traditionally favoured by Indian pugilists, alongside refined ring movement.

The meeting highlighted the necessity for enhanced synergy between domestic and international coaches, addressing the previous discord during Dunne and Dmitruk's tenure.

Boxers' Assessment

Amit Panghal: Demonstrated diminished competitive spirit compared to his Asian Games and CWG triumph.

Nishant Dev: Exhibited exceptional potential and endurance. Controversial officiating potentially cost him a medal.

Nikhat Zareen: Appeared overwhelmed by Olympic pressure, displaying suboptimal preparation.

Lovlina Borgohain: Showed minimal progression since Tokyo, maintaining a cautious approach.

Preeti Pawar: Demonstrated promising aggressive tactics and confidence, presenting potential for LA 2028.

Jaismine Lamboria: Despite evident talent, struggled with Olympic-level pressure.
