When it comes to hiking, the equipment you choose can make a big difference. Whether it’s a lightweight water bottle, a backpack with easily accessible compartments or waterproof zip-off trousers that work for any season, it’s important to prepare yourself for whatever the trail has in store.
One of the best investments you can make is a hiking shirt. Whether you’re getting ready for an expedition during the height of summer or when the weather’s cooling down, a shirt is a versatile layering piece which can work all year round – both on and off the mountains.
“Hiking shirts should be functional, stylish, modular and versatile,” says Graeme Gaughan, design consultant for performancewear label Helly Hansen. “Ideally something lightweight that can perform to the highest level on the trail or in the mountains but also work for everyday wear on the daily commute or running. For me, a performance product should not sacrifice style so the ability to wear the product in different environments is a must for me.”
If you’re not a seasoned hiker, it can be hard to choose the right shirt amidst the many design details and technical credentials on the market.
So, what are the features you should have on your wishlist?
“First of all look out for a nice lightweight fabric for breathability and UV protection,” says Rory Griffin, editor of Orienteer Mapazine – a publication that focuses on technical clothing and outdoor activities. “Then, lots of pockets, some with zips, maybe a key carabiner and a nice cut, whether short or long sleeve – and I personally think white always looks best.”
Robin Schwalbach, Senior Product Manager at Jack Wolfskin, has some tips: “Less is more as you don’t want to carry heavy loads on your lightweight garments,” explains Schwalback. “Essential and easy to use pocketing can be beneficial for keys or credit cards and vents offer good moisture wicking depending on the season.”
Our advice? Always assess the weather of your chosen destination and adjust your checklist accordingly. Walking during the rainy season? Water resistance is key. If you’re travelling a long distance over multiple days, a packable design which you can unpack as soon as the weather changes would be useful. And popper buttons are much easier to use when you’re on the move.
If you’re not into technical wear per se, another option is to go for a lightweight flannel instead. While these don’t always deliver the same level of performance, they’ll certainly keep you cosy when the temperature drops – just avoid wearing them in the rain.
