Best autumn city breaks this year including Amsterdam, Paris and Prague

The beautiful capital of the Netherlands has been ranked as the best Autumnal city to visit in the Northern Hemisphere.

While the summer - and its weeks of absurdly warm temperatures - may now be well and truly behind us, that doesn't mean that holidays are off for the year.

A trip away to one of Europe or America's great cities this October and November could be a great way to ease the pain of the night's drawing in and the days getting colder.

Amsterdam has been judged to be the best city to visit in the Autumn, the Dutch capital providing an excellent combination of affordability and things to do.

There is a series of dance and music festivals running throughout autumn, including The Dutch Theatre Festival, Amsterdam Fringe Festival, and the Red Light Jazz Festival, alongside a number of film festivals.

You won't need to spend hours travelling from one end of the city to the other in order to check out the city's biggest museums: instead, they are conveniently all situated on the picturesque public square of Museumplein.

To really immerse yourself in Amsterdam's culture, it's worth going on a cycling tour along the city's breathtaking canals beneath a canopy of orange and brown leaves.

This way you'll get to take in the sights while also seeing how locals go about day-to-day.

In second place in the rankings is Paris, a city that treats visitors to an overload of sensory delights, and is particularly beautiful when the leaves begin to fall.

In October, Paris’ Galleries, performance spaces, museums, and studios open their doors for the all-night Nuit Blanche cultural festival, offering free admission to all.

November sees the moving Armistice Day Ceremony located at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, and plenty of opportunities to warm your cockles in the city's late night bars.

In third place is London, which makes up for its expensive accommodation with an enormous catalogue of things to do and see.

Events in London during autumn include the Chelsea Antiques Fair, Thames Festival, and the Trafalgar Square Festival.

October also features the opening of Parliament, where the King will ride from Buckingham Palace to the House of Lords in a royal coach for the first time.

Following the heatwave this summer the autumnal leaf show is expected to be particularly vivid, the National Trust has predicted.

Here are the top ten cities to visit this Autumn, according to luggage storage company Bounce.
