Bermuda anglers in grand mood after ‘historic’ marlin catch

A team of anglers participating in the Bermuda Big Game Classic made history Monday with the extraordinary catch of a 1,268-pound Atlantic blue marlin.

“Local Bermuda fishing team, UnWined, just weighed in the third-largest fish in Bermuda history at 1,268 pounds!” Bermuda Triple Crown exclaimed via Instagram.

The billfish measured 12-plus feet and boasted a girth of more than 6 feet.

The catch was made on Day 2 of the competition and earned the team a jackpot payout of $190,666.66.

If no catches of greater weight are logged on Day 3, UnWined will earn another $193,600.

Blue marlin catches of 1,000 pounds or more, described as “granders,” are rare. Catches exceeding 1,200 pounds are extremely rare.

For comparison, the world record for Atlantic blue marlin stands at 1,402 pounds, 2 ounces. That catch occurred in 1992 off Vitoria, Brazil.
