Richard Osman has recalled the “weird day” when Queen Elizabeth II won a game of Pointless, saying she was “very competitive and very funny.”
The TV presenter and author – who announced he was stepping down from his role earlier this year – co-hosted the BBC quiz show with Alexander Armstrong, and looked back on the bizarre moment during an interview on ITV’s Lorraine on Thursday (September 15). It is thought Her Majesty was a big fan of the show, and was lucky enough to captain her own quiz team in 2019.
Richard, 51, described the time his Pointless partner Alexander was invited to host a game of the quiz at the Sandringham branch of the Women’s Institute, of which the late monarch was the president. Recalling the day, Richard said: “[Alexander] was invited up to see the Queen – I note I wasn’t invited!

“He went up to Sandringham WI and he played a game of Pointless. There were two teams, the Queen was captain of one of the teams against a local woman from the village.
“The Queen’s team won. [Alexander] said she was very, very forthright in her opinions as to what answers they should give and, at the end, he presented her with a Pointless trophy.”
According to Richard, his former co-host described Her Majesty as being “very competitive and very funny.” Alexander, 52, also reminisced about the “weird day” during a 2019 interview with Jonathan Ross.
He said: “There were 34 women in this church hall and me and one of them is the Queen… she’s just sitting right there. We played a little version of Pointless where we do a higher or a lower and I’d give a score out… Anyway we did a best of five and she stormed it.”
The television presenter and singer said the Queen won “hands down” and insisted he did not let her win, saying “she was good” and had her “eye on the prize.” Alexander also revealed the trophy he presented to the monarch for her quiz prowess was his personal memento from the show’s 1,000th episode.
