BBC film crews spotted in Leeds for new series from The Tourist creators

A new BBC show made by the people behind one of last year's most popular series has been spotted filming in Leeds.

The BBC announced in November that in partnership with Amazon Freevee it had commissioned Boat Story, a new thriller show. It will star Daisy Haggard, known for Back to Life and Breeders, Paterson Joseph, from Vigil and Tcheky Karyo, known for Baptiste and The Missing.

The show was spotted filming in Leeds on Friday, January 13. Passers-by noticed the crew filming at a church on Harehills Road. They were also filming in Selby this week.

The show is produced by All3Media and Two Brothers Pictures, who have produced The Tourist, Fleabag, and The Missing, among many others. It's an action thriller hoped to follow in the footsteps of The Tourist, which was the BBC's most watched drama of 2022.

The story begins when Daisy Haggard and Paterson Joseph's characters - Janet and Samuel - meet when they find a large haul of cocaine on a shipwrecked boat. They agree to split the money they make from selling it, but find it's much more complicated than that as they deal with police, hitmen, and a gangster called 'The Tailor' (Tcheky Karyo).

Joanna Scalan, Craig Fairbrass and Phil Daniels also star. It's set along the Yorkshire coastline - and therefore has already started filming in and around Yorkshire.

Harry and Jack Williams, writers and Managing Directors of Two Brothers Pictures say: “We loved making The Tourist and Boat Story picks up where that left off - tonally at least. It’s a morality tale and a thriller and other things that make it hard to define even though we seem to be attempting to define it. It’s full of vulnerable, messed up and eccentric characters and we’ve cast some of our favourite actors to play them. We are excited to bring this to life along with our fellow directors.”

Christopher Aird, Two Brothers Pictures Head of Drama, says: “Boat Story will surprise the audience from the first minute. Harry & Jack are challenging conventions we've come to second guess in screen drama. I think this is their boldest show yet and very exciting.”

Tommy Bulfin, BBC Commissioning Editor, says: “Even by Jack and Harry’s remarkable standards, Boat Story is a hugely entertaining and fiendishly clever thriller that I know will have the nation desperate to know what’s coming next. And I cannot think of a more perfect cast to bring these fantastic characters to life – you’ll just have to wait and see which ones you can trust!”
