BBC EastEnders star Michelle Collins 'violently sick' after eating daffodil by accident amid M&S backlash

Former EastEnders star Michelle Collins has shared how she was left 'violently sick' after eating a daffodil by accident. The actress shared the ordeal while appearing on Good Morning Britain on Thursday (March 2) where she spoke to hosts Susanna Reid and Ben Shephard about free school meals.

Michelle is calling on the government to introduce free meals in every primary school in England as she recalled how, growing up, her mother didn’t want her children to partake in free meals due to the stigma around it. She shared how her mum worked three jobs and 'really struggled,' but the children would have had to go into a separate queue for a free meal which was she felt was 'humiliating'.

But also during her appearance on the show, Michelle was asked about her accidental food horror after Marks & Spencer was forced to apologise after a shopper made a worrying observation about an in-store display. Botanist James Wong tweeted a photo taken in one M&S store which shows spring onions and daffodils mixed in with each other. In his tweet, he states that daffodils are "the single most common cause of plant-based poisoning."

M&S has since apologised for the error, saying the issue would be rectified. An M&S Spokesperson said: "Customer safety is our priority and our British daffodils are clearly labelled, with an on-pack warning that they are not safe to consume. This was an error on the part of one of our store teams and we have asked the store to rectify. We apologise for any confusion caused."

But Michelle was actually victim of her own mix-up between daffodils and spring onions. Speaking to Susanna and Ben, Michelle explained that she had been creating cooking videos over lockdown and decided to make a stir fry. "Well I was doing these very silly cooking videos in lockdown and I was doing a stir fry," the 60-year-old said.

"I went to the supermarket and brought home, what I thought, was a spring onion. Cooked it, chopped it up, put it in the wok, had a few tastes and next thing I was running to the loo. I was violently, violently sick."

To which host Ben Shephard said: "You made that mistake because they were close together, you mistook the daffodil for a spring onion!" Michelle added that people thought he was "completely crazy" for making the error but said "if you put them together they look similar."

Michelle originally revealed in February 2021 how she had mistook daffodils for spring onions. Posting a video to her Instagram, she wrote: "#daffodils #springonions . Spot the odd one out!!! I know everyone thought I was #crazy when I said I ate #daffodils but it’s quite easy to do ! #poisonous #surviver."
