Bayer Leverkusen v Arsenal LIVE: Kai Havertz penalty saves Gunners in Champions League last-16 tie

Kai Havertz scored a crucial late penalty against his former club Bayer Leverkusen to give Arsenal the upper hand ahead of their Champions League last-16 second leg at the Emirates next week.

Leverkusen took the lead through captain Robert Andrich’s second-half header, having been the better side for much of the contest.

But the lively Noni Madueke earned a penalty with a tricky run into the box which brought a foul, and Havertz made no mistake as the first leg ended 1-1.

Match summary: Leverkusen 1-1 Arsenal

19:54 , Lawrence Ostlere

Arsenal’s eight-game winning run in the Champions League came to an end as they needed an 89th-minute penalty from substitute Kai Havertz to rescue a 1–1 draw at Bayer Leverkusen in their last-16 first leg on Wednesday.

Former Leverkusen player Havertz converted the late spot-kick to cancel out Robert Andrich’s 46th-minute header for the hosts, marking the first time this season that quadruple-chasing Arsenal had fallen behind in Europe’s elite competition.

The Premier League leaders, who had won all eight of their previous matches to top the table after the league phase, were toothless in attack despite hitting the woodwork in a bright start and could not find a way back into the game until their late penalty, awarded for a foul on Noni Madueke.

The two sides will meet again in London for the return leg next Tuesday.

The referee blows the final whistle and it’s level at half-time of this tie!

Not a vintage Arsenal performance but they have the result to take back to London, while Leverkusen put in a spirited display and may well feel hard done by to not come out with a win.

PENALTY! Finally something a little more direct from Arsenal, and they have a penalty for it!

Madueke skips in between the two defenders and he bursts into the box, and he’s clipped by Tillman!

It’ll go to a VAR check but the on-field call was a penalty.

Another free-kick in a dangerous area for Leverkusen. Can they make something of another set-piece?

A bit more encouraging from Arsenal as they win a corner down the right.

Leverkusen have had a couple of openings that briefly looked promising before coming to nothing, though they aren’t committing many men forward at present.

SAVE! A great move from Leverkusen to start the half!

HALF-TIME! Bayer Leverkusen 0-0 Arsenal

18:43 , Chris Wilson

Not necessarily a bad half for Arsenal, but they just need to do a bit more in attack if they want to break the deadlock.

They’ve been in control for a lot of that half, but they didn’t quite have the invention in the final third once again.

At the other end, they’ve probably been allowing too many openings for Kofane and co. but there’s been little to worry about for the visitors overall.

Nevertheless, Leverkusen will feel like they can take something from this game.

Not a great game for the neutral at the moment, this one. Arsenal have been in control for large parts but Arteta will be irritated with the lack of chance creation and some of the openings they’ve given up.

Bayer Leverkusen 0-0 Arsenal

18:19 , Chris Wilson

33 mins

Very close to an opening for the Gunners as the ball breaks kindly and Gyokeres is almost sent clean through with a through ball, but it’s intercepted at the last.

Moments later, there’s a break in play as Garcia is down after a challenge from Gabriel.

Bayer Leverkusen 0-0 Arsenal

18:17 , Chris Wilson

31 mins

Kofane has certainly been a bright spark for Leverkusen, with the striker now dropping off well before winning the ball off Rice near the edge of the box. The chance goes begging though as Garcia’s cross has far too much on it.

Bayer Leverkusen 0-0 Arsenal

18:16 , Chris Wilson

28 mins

Arsenal briefly threatened to pile on the pressure after that Martinelli effort but once again it’s been too pedestrian in attack.

The gunners have been the better of the two sides but they have little to show for it at the moment.

Bayer Leverkusen 0-0 Arsenal

OFF THE BAR! Oh, what a chance!

Out of nowhere, the Gunners put a lovely move together. A pass into the area is dummied by Eze before Gyokeres shifts it across to Martinelli, who takes a touch wide and blasts a shot that cannons back off the bar!

Bayer Leverkusen 0-0 Arsenal

Just a couple of reminders for Arsenal over the last few minutes, but they’ve barely been troubled in truth.

Nevertheless, they’ve done little to trouble the home defence either so far.

13 mins

Arsenal have settled into possession now, and they’re beginning to dominate proceedings. The hosts haver barely had the ball in the last few minutes.

They do almost launch a counter led by Kofane, but he’s alone against three Arsenal defenders and Rice and co. cover it well.

Patient build-up from Arsenal so far, but no clear-cut chances for the Gunners.

Leverkusen are happy to put men behind the ball when the visitors are in possession.

Bayer Leverkusen 0-0 Arsenal

The first real sight of goal is Leverkusen’s, Kofane forcing a save as he blasts an effort too close to Raya.

At the other end, an Arsenal counter comes to nothing as Saka is overstretched and loses the ball.

He adds that he uses the time ahead of kickoff for “the final words, the intentions, where the opportunities are”.

“We have to win duels, start to dominate territory and possession,” he explains.

The Champions League has eroded the soul of European football – here’s how to fix it

16:55 , Chris Wilson

When the draw for the Champions League last 16 was made, there were at least a few Uefa figures who winced. That was because they were anticipating reactions like that of Pep Guardiola, who rightly said it was “a little bit weird” that Manchester City and Real Madrid were facing each other for the fifth consecutive season and sixth occasion in seven years. Some in Uefa counter that comes from the clear logic of the new seeding system, that the clubs voted for.

But what else is likely to happen when it’s mostly the same teams all the time? And now, increasingly, when it’s teams from the same country all the time?
