Aymeric Laporte and John Stones near Man City return as Rio Ferdinand makes derby prediction

Update on injured City defenders

John Stones will miss the Manchester derby with a hamstring injury he picked up with England, but Pep Guardiola has been encouraged by continued progression from Manchester City teammate Aymeric Laporte.

Guardiola does not expect to be without Stones for the typical length (four-to-six weeks) for hamstring problems, instead hoping he can return in 10 days to two weeks. However, the Spaniard confirmed he will not be available for selection for Sunday's match with Manchester United.

He could also miss the Premier League meeting with Southampton and the impending Champions League double-header with FC Copenhagen. If that is not the news City wanted from the international window, though, Guardiola is happy with Laporte's progress after the centre-back returned to training.

Ferdinand makes derby prediction

Manchester United hero Rio Ferdinand admits he might be following his heart rather than head when predicting what will happen during the Manchester derby on Sunday afternoon (2pm).

After picking up their fourth Premier League title in five seasons, Manchester City remain unbeaten in their latest title defence and are heavy favourites going into the Etihad Stadium showdown. However, their neighbours have gone from strength to strength following a rocky start to the Erik ten Hag tenure.

Since slipping to early-season defeats against Brighton and Brentford - which left United rock-bottom without a single point after two games - Ten Hag and his men have picked up four straight Premier League wins.

But who will earn cross-city bragging rights this Sunday?
