Auguste Rodin wins Derby for Aidan O'Brien as Frankie Dettori suffers disappointment in Classic swansong

Auguste Rodin has won the greatest prize in Flat racing after jockey Ryan Moore claimed the glory in the Group 1 Betfred Derby at Epsom Downs.

It was another success for Aidan O’Brien - who draws level with legendary Lester Piggott with NINE Derby winners - as the 9/2 was first past the post ahead of King of Steel and White Birch. It meant Frankie Dettori failed to complete a fairytale end at Epsom Downs with the legendary Italian jockey, who was on 4/1 favourite Arrest but never got going.

The 52-year-old will hang up his whip at the end of this year following a glittering career and he came up short in a bid to reach another milestone in his career. He had won the race, run over one mile, four furlongs, twice previously, although it took him 15 attempts to break his duck before winning on Authorized in 2007.

O'Brien said: "It's great credit to everyone involved. He's a total homebred horse and came with a massive reputation but kept stepping up to all the markers. Ryan said he'd have preferred a stronger pace and had to quicken twice but I'm so delighted."
