CHANDIGARH: The highest single-day case spike after February 9 was reported on Friday, when 96 tested Covid positive. The positivity rate has soared to 5.79% and the active cases have risen to 458.
On February 9, as many as 123 cases were reported and the positivity rate was 4.20%. Thereafter, the cases started declining. "The cases are expected to increase for a few more days. Most of the people have been travelling with family and children in the vacations, besides there are no Covid restrictions. This has been one of the main reasons for the rise of the infection," said a public health worker. "These days no one comes for testing. It is only known when someone with symptoms comes to a hospital and is asked for a test. Also, there is no contact tracing now. By the time report comes, the virus is transmitted to many," he added.
The patients admitted to the city hospitals have also increased to 26. While 22 are on oxygen support, the others are on ventilators. Two patients each are on ventilators in PGI and GMCH-32.
As many as 55 patients were discharged on the day. The city's case count is 93,378; toll tally is 1,165; and the recovery figure is 91,755
"We are fully geared up for any surge. The vaccination pace is slow... people have to come voluntarily," said the director, health services, UT, Dr Suman Singh.
