Argentina president Milei says ‘the Falklands are our future’ to reignite tensions with UK

  • The Argentinian government led by President Javier Milei has initiated legal proceedings against 45 individuals and companies linked to offshore oil exploration around the Falkland Islands as part of a renewed attempt to assert its territorial claim.
  • In a national address, President Milei highlighted the Sea Lion oilfield project as a clear threat to Argentina's claims and announced plans to execute sanction decrees against involved energy firms, alongside building a new naval base in Tierra del Fuego, while also saying “the Falklands are out future”.
  • Foreign Secretary Ed Miliband and Defence Secretary Wes Streeting reaffirmed that the UK's commitment to the Falklands remains unshakeable, emphasising that the islanders' right to self-determination is paramount under international law.
  • Downing Street confirmed there would be no formal diplomatic response to the threats, stating that London seeks to strengthen relations with Buenos Aires while fully supporting the islanders' right to develop their natural resources.
  • The diplomatic friction comes after US president Donald Trump suggested Washington would not assist Britain in a future Falklands conflict, citing a lack of British support for his military campaign in Iran.
