Antonio Conte may have found what Tottenham have been missing after Brighton victory

Antonio Conte made five substitutions during Tottenham's tie against Brighton and the depth of the squad helping during matches is not something that has always been a success this season.

Since the arrival of the Italian, Spurs have seen improvements both on and off the pitch, which have helped them win matches and now progress to the fourth round of the FA Cup.

The Lilywhites now have to prepare for a busy final few months of the season, with lots of fixtures to play and a busy schedule means Conte will need all of his players available for as many games as possible.

The January transfer window brought two new arrivals to Spurs, with Juventus duo Dejan Kulusevski and Rodrigo Bentancur being announced on deadline day.

Kulusevski and Bentancur were both brought to N17 from the Italian side and were given their first opportunity to impress their new boss in the tie against Graham Potter's side.

It was the first chance for the duo to experience playing in front of their home fans at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium and playing the cup tie against a fellow Premier League side would have only improved that experience.

"It was important also to breathe the atmosphere for the two new signings, for us, for Dejan Kulusevski and Rodrigo Bentancur," Conte admitted in his post match press conference.

"It was important to come in and to understand the intensity of this league. I repeat, two good players, two young players with talent. They can help us.

"Rodrigo, despite his age, only 24-years-old, has a lot of experience because he played 120 games for Juventus. Kulusevski, the same. I think they can help us," he added.

"I’m pleased that I gave them the opportunity to come in and also breathe this fantastic atmosphere in our stadium. Our fans, the noise tonight was so intense that it was also very difficult to communicate with the players."

Kulusevski made two key passes in the short time he was on the pitch and Bentancur showed some lovely skill and composure.

Both players showed some promising signs on their debut and they will now provide competition for their teammates, as they try and break in to Conte's regular line-up.

Injuries are still affecting Tottenham as although Cristian Romero and Son Heung-min both returned, Oliver Skipp and Japhet Tanganga were both left out of the matchday squad due to their own injuries.

The 52-year-old made five changes from the starting XI that lost to Chelsea before the international break and one key aspect that was clear at Stamford Bridge was Spurs' lack of impact subs.

This season Tottenham's lack of quality in the depth of the squad has been made clear, especially when a number of changes have been made in fixtures and the fringe players just haven't been able to impress.

A busy schedule means rotation is inevitable but it is hard to do so when the gap between the strongest side and the fringe players is big, which is something Conte has previously commented on.

"It’s difficult for the coach to make rotations because you want the best, but you have to know that if you want to be competitive, you need a couple of players for every role," the Italian explained.

"Between the player who usually plays, and the other player, the gap has to be not so big in every role. This is a problem for all the teams."

This problem was very evident at Spurs and although it was just their first minutes at Tottenham, could the new arrivals be helping to bridge that gap?

The likes of Harry Winks, Skipp and Pierre Emile Hojbjerg have all had regular game time at stages this season but Bentancur's arrival will now cause some competition.

Equally, Son, Lucas Moura and Steven Bergwijn will now have to compete with Kulusevski for their spot in Conte's starting line-up.

This competition can only be good for the Lilywhites as it is likely to make the current squad members want to work even hard to show why they deserve to be first choice.

However maybe more importantly, it means that the Italian has options on the bench and these options could be players that could come on and make an impact in the game.

Tottenham's transfer window also saw four first team outgoings, with Dele Alli being the only permanent move out of the four.

However, some of those outgoings were failing to make an impact when given the opportunity, meaning finding quality beyond the starting XI was being made more difficult for the Spurs boss.

On Saturday night, the first substitution was made after the three goals had been scored but those players who came on worked hard to try and get even more out of the game, which was a refreshing change from some matches this season.

It is far too early to even suggest what impact the new arrivals might have on the Tottenham side but they have both shown glimpses of potential and if they're able to settle in and develop under Conte, as well as continued improvements to the current squad members, it could provide the 52-year-old with better quality options both on and off the bench.
