US DELIVERY giant Amazon has made a major deal to receive power from a new wind farm in Shetland.
Bosses at Amazon confirmed they made a power purchase agreement to take the generation of 36MW of renewable electricity from the Mossy Hill wind farm, based on the outskirts of Lerwick, which is due to become operational in 2030.
Developed by Statkraft, the site will feature eight turbines, which are due to be delivered in 2029, and is projected to generate enough electricity to power the equivalent of 57,000 homes annually.
Statkraft’s UK and Ireland country manager Kevin O’Donovan welcomed the deal and said Shetland has a “proud history” of energy production.
He said: “We’re pleased to have agreed a partnership with Amazon for our Mossy Hill Wind Farm in Shetland, which gives us the certainty to move the project forward.
“Shetland has a proud history of energy production. As the country shifts towards more homegrown renewable power, we’re proud to be playing our part in that transition.”
Meanwhile, Amazon said it has now invested in more than 50 carbon-free energy projects across the UK.
The business giant said that once fully operational, these projects will generate more than 1GW of carbon-free energy capacity in the UK, enough to power the equivalent of more than 1.3 million households annually.
Amazon’s UK and Ireland country manager John Boumphrey said the project in Shetland “builds on years of investment in renewable energy across the UK”.
“From the Shetland Islands to the coasts of England, our renewable energy investments are creating real jobs and powering local communities,” he said.
“Last year we announced our plan to invest £40 billion in the UK by 2027, and the transition to a lower-carbon economy is a part of how we’re putting that commitment to work.”
