Ally McCoist was forced to apologise for sounding too Scottish while commentating on the Qatar World Cup. The Rangers legend went full-blown Glaswegian while reporting on Brazil's 4-1 win over South Korea for ITV on Monday night.
After getting overly excited by Brazil's spectacular first-half display, the former Ibrox manager slipped into his native tongue - leaving his colleague baffled. Fellow pundit Jon Champion joked that he had no idea what McCoist was saying, with some viewers sharing their own confusion over his commentary on social media.
After the second half kicked off, McCoist, 60, said: "I've been reliably informed by a member of our staff that I was getting very much Glaswegian as that first half was going on. I was getting a bit excited so I can apologise. I was actually getting a bit like Roy Keane, I was getting annoyed at that South Korea back four more than anything."
Champion, 57, responded: "I didn't have a clue what you were talking about from about the 30th minute onwards. I thought there was a danger you were going to spontaneously combust at one point."
While some fans agreed, others rushed to McCoist's defence and said he shouldn't have felt the need to apologise. One Twitter user wrote: "The worse South Korea defend the thicker Ally McCoist's accent becomes. Will need subtitles if there's another 3v3."
Another said: "Ally McCoist is getting so annoyed with Korea's defence that his accent has reached a point where I can no longer understand what he's saying."
However, a third viewer wrote: "Ridiculous that Ally McCoist felt he needed to apologise for his Glaswegian accent after ITV Sport colleagues 'struggled' to understand him."
Dougie Campbell, a councillor in Dumfries and Galloway, said: "Never, ever apologise for your accent or where you come from. It's who you are. Own it and be proud of it."
