Ally McCoist aghast at Celtic price as Rangers icon reckons bookies have scored a Champions League own goal

Rangers icon Ally McCoist reckons Shakhtar Donetsk are a Champions League bargain at the bookies ahead of their crunch clash with Celtic.

The Ukrainians will host Ange Postecoglou 's side in Group F and know a win in Warsaw against Ange Postecoglou's side would see them six points ahead, while also putting a serious dent in their rivals' hopes of progressing. But the oddsmakers have Celtic as favourites despite their opening day defeat to Real Madrid and Shakhtar's thumping away win in Leipzig.

Celtic are being backed and some bettors are offering odds of 2/1 for Marian Shved and Co to secure a telling result at a neutral venue. McCoist was caught on the hop when told the latest prices ahead of the big one which is set to have major ramifications in the race for European football after the World Cup.

Speaking to talkSPORT, he said: "What, WHAT? I just think that's incredible, I really do. They had a brilliant result in Leipzig, I think they won 4-1, maybe the mitigating factor would be the game is in Poland, would level the odds ever so slightly. And Celtic, first half, against Real Madrid were very, very good. I would have to suggest 2/1 is rather generous."

But McCoist has no qualms with Rangers being available at 3/1 against a Napoli side who are flying under Luciano Spalletti after their stunning 4-1 Champions League drubbing of Liverpool. However, he is refusing to write his old team off.

He added: "I think that's about right, having seen both in the first performances, Rangers at Ajax and Napoli at home to Liverpool, I think you've just about priced that right. However, we live in hope and the home performances in Europe, all be it in a different tournament but against good sides Dortmund and Leipzig, have been excellent. Rangers are going to need that and some tonight."
