Liverpool have a lot of work to do in the summer transfer window if they are to close the gap on Premier League winners Manchester City next season.
The Reds finished fifth in an underwhelming campaign and Jurgen Klopp will have to be at his charming best when convincing new signings to join the club without Champions League football.
Klopp and his recruitment staff have been criticised for not addressing the issues in the midfield, but mistakes of the past could well be corrected this transfer window.

Alexis Mac Allister is at the top of Klopp's transfer targets and the World Cup winner could soon be on his way to Anfield.
It is understood Liverpool are looking to wrap up any business early in the transfer window, ensuring changes to the squad could soon be seen. Below is a round-up of the latest rumours relating to the Reds.
Mac Allister future 'defined in coming days'
The Brighton & Hove Albion midfielder's father, Carlos, is now thought to be in England to finalise the deal with Liverpool - who are reportedly offering a contract until June 2028.
Mac Allister has been in impressive form for Brighton and during Argentina's World Cup winning campaign in Qatar - attracting the interest of numerous Premier League clubs.
Journalist Cesar Luis Merlo said: "The future of Alexis Mac Allister will be defined in the coming days: Liverpool is getting closer to signing him. Carlos, his father and agent, is already in England to finalize the operation. The Reds are proposing a contract through June 2028."
Liverpool 'learn Manu Kone price'
The Reds have reportedly held talks with Borussia Monchengladbach over the signing of star midfielder Manu Kone this summer.
Liverpool's apparent interest in the young Frenchman became apparent in recent times and the Reds are possibly keen on adding the talented midfielder to their ranks alongside Mac Allister.
Transfer expert Fabrizio Romano reports via Tribal Football: "Liverpool are informed of price tag for Manu Kone as talks took place this week.
"The French midfielder could be available for €35/40m, 'Gladbach are prepared to let him leave for that fee. The Reds working to complete Mac Allister deal, then Kone's also in the list."
Defender admits Liverpool dream
Micky van de Ven has admitted it would be a 'dream' to play at Anfield after visiting the stadium with his dad when Liverpool beat Arsenal, as old quotes have once again come to the surface.
The defender has been linked with a £30million move to the Reds with Klopp reportedly keen on recruiting a left-footed centre half to feature in his new system.
Speaking to AZ WAZ back in January, the Wolfsburg defender said: “I once went to the Liverpool stadium with my dad.
“That was over Christmas on Boxing Day. Liverpool vs Arsenal. That was madness. Then when ‘You’ll Never Walk Alone’ comes [on] – that’s a goosebump moment, that was very cool. It’s a dream to play there.”
