Ajax star Alvarez has already dropped major transfer hint that could scupper Chelsea advances

Edson Alvarez has already suggested that he is content with current employers Ajax amid transfer interest from Chelsea.

The Blues have been linked with a move for the Mexican midfielder, with Football Insider suggesting that the reigning European champions have watched his performances at the Johan Cruyff Arena, whilst Premier League rivals Leicester City and Crystal Palace are also thought to be interested.

It remains to be seen whether Chelsea’s tentative scouting mission could result in an attempt to bring Alvarez to Stamford Bridge at some point in the near future, especially with Thomas Tuchel being blessed with a number of talented midfield options at the current time.

Regardless, the 24-year-old has already hinted that he is eyeing an extended stay in the Netherlands, having praised life at Ajax.

He only signed a new four-year deal with the Dutch giants in October 2021 - a contract that is set to run until the summer of 2025 - and left no illusions over his commitment to the club.

Speaking to Dutch outlet De Telegraaf, he said: “Sofia [Alvarez’s wife] and I feel at home in Amsterdam and at Ajax. This [new contract] is a signal to the staff, my fellow players and the fans that I am happy.”

Alvarez arrived at Ajax in January 2019 in a move from Mexican outfit Club America.

Since then, he has gone on to make 84 appearances for the Amsterdam outfit and scored six goals, winning an Eredivisie and Dutch Cup in the process.

He is also hugely experienced on the international stage, having made 52 appearances for the Mexico national team, after making his debut back in 2017 as a 19-year-old.

Whilst naturally a midfielder, Alvarez is also capable of deputising at centre-back, an option that Chelsea could do with considering a number of their current defensive options are out of contract at the end of the season.
