Shelley Duvall, the acclaimed actress known for her iconic role in “The Shining,” passed away at the age of 75. Her life partner, Dan Gilroy, confirmed that she peacefully departed in her sleep at her residence in Blanco, Texas, due to complications from diabetes.
Duvall's acting career took off after being discovered by director Robert Altman, who cast her in the 1970 film “Brewster McCloud.” Despite initial hesitations about acting, she thrived in her collaborations with Altman, starring in films like “McCabe & Mrs. Miller” and “Thieves Like Us.”
Her breakthrough came with the cult classic “Nashville” in 1975, where she won the Cannes Film Festival Award for Best Actress. Duvall's talent shone in the 1977 film “3 Women,” earning her a nomination for the British Academy Film Award for Best Actress in a Leading Role.
One of her most memorable roles was as Wendy Torrance in the 1980 psychological horror film “The Shining,” alongside Jack Nicholson. In 1988, Duvall established Think Entertainment, a production company focused on developing content for cable channels.
After a successful career in the late 1990s, Duvall took a hiatus from acting in 2002 to prioritize family. Last year, she disclosed that she had relocated to Texas to support her brother battling spinal cancer.
After a 20-year break, Duvall announced her return to the big screen in the upcoming independent horror-thriller film “The Forest Hills,” directed and written by Scott Goldberg. She leaves behind her brothers, Scott, Stewart, and Shane.
