Women with hot flashes and night sweats now have a strong endorsement from the nation's leading group of obstetrician-gynecologists to consider hormone therapy. The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists issued new guidance on Oct. 15 that strongly recommends systemic menopausal hormone therapy for these symptoms in people without medical reasons to avoid it.
The new Clinical Practice Guideline No. 13 replaces ACOG's Practice Bulletin No. 141 from January 2014. It also strongly recommends hormone therapy for sleep problems caused by hot flashes and grades a wide range of nonhormonal medications and nondrug treatments.
