Abandoned Edinburgh warehouse to be transformed into luxury housing and shop

Edinburgh council look set to approve a new housing and retail development in Leith.

The council’s Development Management Sub Committee are due to meet next week and a report shows that they are to recommend that councillors pass the planning application at Constitution Street.

The application from K&S Mir consists of the conversion of number of buildings from Constitution Street to John’s Lane and seeks to create 35 new houses and one retail unit.

Among the buildings that will be converted are 111 Constitution Street, a two storey warehouse, and was originally constructed as a stables between 1849 and 1876.

The C-listed John’s Lane property is a two storey and attic warehouse, dating from the early 19th century, located on a narrow back lane.

The property has been derelict for almost four decades. The structure has been on the Buildings at Risk Register since 2012. There is evidence that historically the building was at least one storey higher.

However, there were over 30 objections on the planning application from concerned local residents.

But the report from the Development Management Committee believes the proposal would be a “positive addition” to the area.

It stated: “Overall, the design is high quality, contemporary architecture and the development will be a positive addition to the street and the area in compliance with design policies. It will create a sense of place.”

Edinburgh councillors are expected to make final decision when the committee meet next week, on January 26.
