A series of near misses prompt renewed call for light rail safety

Canberrans are being urged to take care around the light rail, with the government releasing a new video showing a series of near misses with light rail vehicles.

The video shows several pedestrians running in front of an incoming light rail vehicle and cyclists riding in front of the light rail.

It also shows a car crashing into the side of a light rail and near misses with cars.

Transport Canberra has released the video of the near misses as part of rail safety week. There will also be new wraps on light rails around safety designed by students.

"Rail safety week is an important annual reminder for everyone travelling on or around light rail to be alert and limit distractions in order to stay safe," Transport Minister Chris Steel said.

"No matter whether you are a pedestrian crossing the road, a passenger travelling by light rail, or a driver along the corridor, we all play a role in rail safety."

Meanwhile, parts of Commonwealth Avenue will be closed for the weekend from 8pm on Friday, August 16 to 6am on Monday, August 19 to allow for works related to light rail.

Commonwealth Avenue will be closed to most traffic in the northbound direction between State Circle and Parkes Way and fully closed between Parkes Way and Vernon Circle.

Traffic will be diverted from Adelaide Avenue onto State Circle. Transport Canberra will advise motorists to use Kings Avenue Bridge to cross the lake in a northbound direction.

The work is taking place to facilitate the transfer of utilities for the project to raise London Circuit.

This project will allow the light rail track to be extended from Alinga Street in Civic to Commonwealth Park.
