9/11 firefighter's lifesaving bone marrow transplant from Brit

A firefighter from New York who battled to save lives following the 9/11 terror attacks has been given a lifeline in a fight against leukaemia by a British man. Sal Parisi, now 68, bravely responded on the frontline as the US suffered tragic terror attacks.

There were 343 Fire Department of New York (FDNY) staff killed during the rescue operation, with many more suffering in the aftermath. Sal developed leukaemia, which he believes is linked to exposure to the devastation caused by the attack on the World Trade Centre.

After serving in the fire department for 27 years, Sal was left fearing he wouldn't get to see his grandchildren grow up when he was handed a leukaemia diagnosis nine years after retiring. But an international search for a compatible bone marrow donor led to one being found thousands of miles away - in Coventry.
