7 of Scotland's most incredible buildings to visit this summer

With the summer arriving and the school holidays meaning we may need ways to entertain bored kids, there's never been a better excuse to get them out exploring Scotland's architectural wonders.

From abandoned mansions to a 'House in a Box', there are loads of epic and unusual buildings to be found in Scotland. Here are some of our favourites.

The Pineapple, Airth

Designed to resemble a giant 40 feet stone pineapple, the folly near the village of Airth was built in 1761 by the 4th Earl of Dunmore.

Dubbed the Dunmore Pineapple - it has to be seen to be believed and is regularly chosen as Scotland's strangest building.

It was built by John Murray as part of a summer house on his expansive estate and as a gift for his wife Charlotte.

Heading south from Glasgow along the Ayrshire coast, you'll find one of Scotland's - and the world's - most whimsical castles.

Kelburn Castle in Largs is surrounded by woodland but don't worry, you'll easily find it thanks to the psychedelic mural that covers much of its exterior.

The large country house, which dates back to the 12th century, was given its vibrant and fantastic makeover in 2007.

It now has plenty of exciting walks and play parks on offer to entertain the kids.

The incredible 'House in a Box' is actually and ingenious way of protecting on of Scotland's architectural treasures.

Since it was built, Charles Rennie Mackintosh's 1904 domestic masterpiece the Hill House in Helensburgh has been absorbing the rain, putting the building and its unique interiors at risk.

To protect the house, The National Trust for Scotland has embarked on a pioneering conservation programme. The first stage has seen the construction of the Hill House Box, a protective steel frame wrapped in the world's largest chainmail structure.

Kinnoull Tower, Perth

Built by the 9th Earl of Kinnoull, Thomas Hay, the imposing Kinnoull Tower was built as an ode to the cliff-top castles Hay had witnessed on his travels around the Rhine Valley.

Designed to resemble a small castle, it was constructed by Hay in the 19th century and remains as a proud bastion on its lofty position overlooking the Tay valley.

It's an incredible walk with rewarding views at the top.

This wonderfully named gothic folly, was built in a prominent position in a gap between two wooded areas near Kelso by famed architects William and Robert Adam.

Beginning in 1725 it took over seventy years to complete, with its unique name derived from a story about a Pictish Princess named Hunimundias.

Samye Ying Buddhist Centre, Eskdalemuir

Bringing a little slice of southeast Asia to southwest Scotland is the Samye Ying Buddhist Centre in Dumfries & Galloway.

Founded way back in 1967, this idyllic religious centre is found in a peaceful valley on the banks of the River Esk. It is the first Tibetan Buddhist Centre to have been established in the West.

These 'Fairytale ruins' in Perthshire were once a stately country house that was owned by the owner of Tennent's.

The gutted building that was once Dunalastair House retains much of its original external features, including its conical roofs, chimneys and even a coat of arms above the main door.

Damaged by fire in the late 40s, it fell into decline and is now little less than a shell.

Though you can't access the house itself you can access the grounds.
