Most Thyroid Nodules Are Found by Accident
Thyroid nodules are discovered far more often during imaging done for something else entirely, a neck ultrasound ordered for a swollen lymph node, a CT scan for a spine complaint, than they are from symptoms a patient notices. The American Thyroid Association estimates that high-resolution ultrasound detects nodules in up to 68 percent of randomly selected adults. The vast majority of those people had no idea anything was there. Finding one on your report does not mean something went wrong; it means the imaging was thorough.
