There’s one more sign pointing to Jimmy Garoppolo’s exit from San Francisco. Head coach Kyle Shanahan was already clear in saying he didn’t see a scenario where the veteran quarterback would be back with the 49ers for a seventh season. Now general manager John Lynch is echoing similar sentiments.
While Shanahan was blunt in his assessment of the QB’s future, Lynch on Tuesday was more diplomatic when asked about Garoppolo at the NFL combine.
“Jimmy has been tremendous for us,” Lynch said. “In our first year, at the end of the year we do a trade and Jimmy comes in, lights it up and a lot of people want to talk about what we didn’t accomplish with him. What I know is we won a lot of football games with Jimmy. I admire, we admire his toughness. We admire the teammate that he was, so I know everyone wants to talk about some discourse and all that, but I do believe that it’s probably run its course, but I think we leave with nothing but fond memories of Jimmy and Jimmy’s going to go play good football for someone.”
Garoppolo is an unrestricted free agent for the first time since his first offseason with the team. There was an expectation he’d be traded last season, but a shoulder injury derailed those plans, so he restructured his contract to stay with the club for one more season.
While anything is possible, there doesn’t appear to be any path to a Garoppolo return to San Francisco.
