49ers Bring Back Iconic Franchise Running Back in Front Office Role

Nine years after last taking the field for the 49ers, franchise legend Frank Gore has reached an agreement to return to San Francisco in a front office role ahead of the 2023 season.

Gore, San Francisco’s all-time leading rusher, will work alongside general manager John Lynch and his staff in a football advisor capacity, the team announced Saturday. The former star running back also commemorated the news by sharing a picture on Instagram of his contract signing.

“He’ll go out on the road with some of our road scouts to make school calls,” Lynch said in a statement regarding Gore’s role, per ESPN. “He is a smart football mind, and we want to tap into it and he wants to learn from us, so it’s a good thing for everyone involved.”

Gore’s decision to join the 49ers front office comes just over a year after the 40-year-old signed a one-day contract to retire with his former team.

A member of the Niners for 10 of his 16 NFL seasons, Gore, a third-round pick in 2005, became a lasting fixture in team lore after building a reputation as a hard-nosed and resilient runner. He accumulated 11,073 rushing yards and 64 and of his 81 career touchdowns in 148 career games in San Francisco, finishing his career as the NFL’s third all-time leading rusher with 16,000 yards in 241 games played.
