A viral video appearing to show Charli XCX giving Taylor Swift a 'rude reaction' at the 2026 MTV VMAs has been debunked after fact-checkers found the footage was combined from different moments of the ceremony.
The clip appeared to show Swift speaking on stage before cutting to Charli sitting in the audience, where she looked expressionless while clapping. The footage quickly fuelled renewed speculation about a long-rumoured feud between the pair.
However, the Charli footage was not filmed during Swift's speech. Various reports and fact-checking found that the reaction was recorded during Nirvana's Video Vanguard Award segment instead.
The Viral Charli XCX VMAs Clip
The misleading video circulated on X after Sunday's ceremony, appearing to show Charli reacting to Swift as she accepted the inaugural Artist Director Honors award.
The clip was edited to place footage of Charli's audience reaction alongside footage of Swift speaking. The edited presentation gave the impression that Charli was unimpressed by Swift's speech, prompting some users to revive speculation about tension between the two pop stars.

Where the Footage Actually Came From
The clip of Charli's reaction was traced to the moment Nirvana received the Video Vanguard Award rather than during Swift's speech.
Lead Stories compared the circulating clip with footage posted by the official VMAs account and found that two separate moments had been combined to create the appearance of a reaction to Swift. Charli's expression and clapping cannot be used to establish how she reacted to Swift's speech.
UNILAD also reported that the original post came from the @petaltrin X account, which is labelled as a parody account.

Charli XCX and Taylor Swift Feud Rumours Explained
The misleading VMAs video gained traction partly because of long-running fan speculation about a rift between Charli and Swift. The rumours intensified in 2024 after the release of Charli's Brat track 'Sympathy Is a Knife', which some listeners interpreted as being about Swift.
The song describes Charli feeling insecure around another woman and includes references that fans connected to Swift's past relationship with The 1975 frontman Matty Healy.
