20-year-old son forever grateful to Lanarkshire hospice carers after death of 'warrior mum'

A Lanarkshire man is raising funds for the hospice that took care of his 'fighter' mum who passed away last year.

Nathan Spence, from Bargeddie, is giving back to St Andrew's Hospice in Airdrie to thank the staff who took care of his mum, Alison, during her battle with cancer.

The 20-year-old says the carers really helped the family through the dark times.

Nathan told Glasgow Live: "Two years ago my mum was diagnosed with terminal bone mets.

"We were in and out of hospital for a period of time and it was during covid which was tricky.

"My mum was later admitted to the hospice. We spent six months there for the first period.

"At that point they wanted mum to come home. They sent people out the house and tried to make it as comfortable as possible. They gave us a hospital bed, a chair, supplied us with carers.

"They also dropped off meals at the start of the week for me and my mum. That lasted for about six months to a year then my mum got quite unwell again.

"She went back to the hospice for a second spell. Then she stayed for another six months and they were so good to us.

"They let the dog, who hadn't seen her in ages, come in. It was the small things that meant alot.

"Eventually my mum came home and passed away. The support they gave made it easier for us.

"I had to help with care before I went to work and then after I came home so I was really drained.

"When the carers helped it was a massive weight off my shoulders because I could go to work and not worry about it so much."

The loving son also lost his dad, Donald, to cancer.

He is still in contact with members of staff at the hospice who continue to support the apprentice plumber after losing his parent.

The 20-year-old said: "I still chat with them.

"There was a chaplain that we grew really close with and she became really friendly with my mum.

"I reached out to them recently asking for help so they are going to provide counselling for me.

"They still look out for me now."

Alison lost her fight with bone mets in September.

Her passing has left a huge hole in the heart of Nathan but he still has the memories of his inspiring and wonderful mother.

The adoring son said: "She was a star.

"She put everyone before herself, she was such a great person.

"She worked for the NHS for about 20 years and she never complained.

"Even when she was really unwell, I don't think she complained once, she just got on with it.

"During her first stay in the hospice they phoned me and all family and they thought she was going to pass away. We went up and she was really poorly.

"She then sprung back into action and lasted another year. She was such a fighter and a warrior."

Now the fundraiser has set his sights on climbing the Goat Fell mountain on the Isle of Arran.

Alison grew up on the Scottish island and it was a place that the inspirational mum held dear.

Nathan said: "We thought it was quite fitting to do the climb there, 25 of my mates are doing it with me.

"We play in a football team, so quite a lot of the boys from there are doing it. A few other friends and family are doing it as well so it's quite a good squad.

"She always said she wanted me to give back to the hospice because they were so good to us. It's a great place and they do so much for so many people."
