UBON RATCHATHANI - A Thai soldier lost his leg when he stepped on a landmine during mine clearance on Monday in this northeastern province bordering Cambodia.
The 2nd Army said that Sgt Maj Charnnarong Wongchana, a member of the Thailand Mine Action Centre, stepped on a landmine during mine clearance near Chong An Ma border pass in Nam Yuen district about 10.30am.
He lost his lower right leg and also suffered wounds to his right hand and body. He was given emergency first aid and then rushed to Nam Yuen Hospital, and later referred to Sunpasitthiprasong Hospital in Muang district.
Royal Thai Army spokesman Maj Gen Winthai Suvaree said the area being cleared of mines had been occupied by Cambodian soldiers before they were pushed back into their own territory by Thai troops.
Sgt Maj Charnnarong is the 15th Thai soldier to lose a leg to a landmine along the volatile border with Cambodia, scene of several lethal clashes between the two countries last year.
