Wagner mercenaries were on Thursday reported to be trying to head back into Russia after threatening retaliation over the suspected killing of their leader Yevgeny Prigozhin in a plane crash on the orders of Vladimir Putin.

Two months after challenging Vladimir Putin’s leadership in an apparent but abortive “mutiny”, Yevgeny Prigozhin – the former owner of the mercenary private military company Wagner Group – has joined a long list of prominent Russians to die in mysterious circumstances.

Russian mercenary chief Yevgeny Prigozhin appears to have posted his first video address since leading a short-lived mutiny in late June. In the unverified footage published Monday, Prigozhin said the Wagner group was making Africa "freer", adding that it was also recruiting fighters.
