The Editors Guild in a report published last week had critiqued media coverage out of Manipur, a State which has seen ethnic clashes for the last four months.

Three members of a fact-finding team and the president of the Editors Guild of India have been booked for publishing a “false, fabricated and paid” report on how Manipur media outlets have covered the ongoing conflict.

The Editors Guild is “deeply concerned” by some of the “draconian provisions” of the Press and Registration of Periodicals Bill 2023, which was passed by the Rajya Sabha on August 3.

The Editors Guild issued a statement today condemning “recent incidents of intimidation and harassment of journalists by political leaders while doing their jobs”. “This trigger-happy approach to browbeat and harass reporters and camera persons undermine the freedom of the press,” it said.

After the Editors Guild of India and the Association of Indian Magazines filed petitions against the April amendment to the IT Rules, the Bombay High Court tagged both petitions to a plea in the same matter filed by comedian Kunal Kamra.
