Madhuri, a 36-year-old elephant living at a Jain monastery in Kolhapur, Maharashtra, has found herself at the centre of a jumbo-sized controversy. The Bombay High Court recently ordered that she be relocated to Vantara – the plush private animal sanctuary in Gujarat run by Anant Ambani of Reliance Group.

It was a decision based on oral information that may have set off a chain of convictions in a MCOCA court in the 2006 Mumbai blasts case. An order that was overturned nearly a decade later by the Bombay High Court, and now stayed by the Supreme Court.
