The Russian private military Wagner Group on Wednesday denied it was operating in Sudan and said it had nothing to do with battles rocking the giant impoverished African state.

As rival military factions fight on the streets of Sudan's capital, three women describe what life is like for them. "I think we can die at any time. Nobody can feel safe in Khartoum now," one says.

Israel is using its relationships with the generals leading the Sudanese military and the RSF to urge them to end the fighting.

The warring generals show little interest in ending hostilities amid what could be an existential threat to them.

Thousands of residents have fled the Sudanese capital Khartoum as fighting between the army and Rapid Support Forces paramilitaries raged for a fifth day. A 24-hour humanitarian truce collapsed almost immediately. At least 270 civilians have lost their lives. UN and foreign government staff are being evacuated.

A battle that is hammering Khartoum and dragging Sudan to the brink of civil war pits the army chief and his regular forces against the streetwise fighters loyal to a former warlord.

Endre Stiansen, the Norwegian ambassador to Sudan, said the ‘urban warfare’ in Khartoum is unprecedented.

Sudan is in crisis. Fighting continues between Sudan’s military leader, Abdelfattah Al-Burhan, and his deputy on Sudan’s ruling council, General Mohamed Hamdan Dagolo, who commands the paramilitary group the Rapid Support Forces (RSF).
