As more and more Indians travel abroad, casteism has been increasingly subjected to public condemnation in other countries. Seattle recently became the first city in the US and outside South Asia to ban caste discrimination. And at the helm of this historic legislation was city council member Kshama Sawant.

Calls to outlaw discrimination based on caste, a division of people based on birth or descent, have grown louder among South Asian diaspora communities in the United States.

SEATTLE — Seattle made history Tuesday as the first city in the U.S. to expressly ban caste-based discrimination after an outpouring of input from South Asian Americans.

The Commerce Ministry is set to organise as many as 450 activities to stimulate exports this year, focusing mainly on four potential markets: the Middle East, South Asia, China, and Cambodia, Laos, Myanmar and Vietnam (CLMV).
