On Friday, OpenAI’s high-flying chief executive Sam Altman was unexpectedly fired by the company’s board. Co-founder and chief technology officer Greg Brockman was also removed as the board president, after which he promptly resigned.

The shock announcement follows reports that Microsoft and other investors were pushing to reinstate Altman as CEO.

Investors raced to reinstate Altman after the OpenAI board fired him Friday. But Elon Musk says for AI safety reasons the true reason for the firing must be revealed.

"None of this bodes well," writes the NYU professor, who's worried about the nonprofit's board getting overpowered.
