Omar Abdullah on Monday received a letter from Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha, inviting him to form the next government in the union territory.

This year’s local elections in India’s northernmost territory of Jammu and Kashmir were the first since the national government controversially stripped the region of its semi-autonomous status in 2019. It’s also the first local election in Muslim-majority Kashmir since 2014.

In J&K Assembly polls, the NC won 42 seats while its alliance partner Congress won 6.

The Jammu and Kashmir poll results have set the stage for a National Conference-Congress government, with Omar Abdullah’s likely return as the chief minister, and the end of a decade-long hiatus for an elected government in the erstwhile state.
