Nazanin Zaghari-Ratcliffe should not have to face abuse on social media over her criticism of government efforts to free her, Downing Street has said.

Following her release from detention in Iran, Nazanin Zaghari-Ratcliffe, held hostage since 2016, said: “what happened now should have happened six years ago”. She was referring to the fact that her release had been secured at the same time as the British government paid Iran a debt it had owed…

The former foreign secretary said it was the UK which owed the mother-of-one an explanation following her six-year detention in Iran.

Nazanin Zaghari-Ratcliffe does not owe the Government any gratitude and should receive “an explanation” for why it took years to secure her release, former Foreign Secretary Jeremy Hunt said on Tuesday.
