Naga Munchetty was left horrified at a vile hashtag on Twitter as critics blasted ‘ungrateful’ Nazanin Zaghari-Ratcliffe.
The 44-year-old had spent six years detained in Iran on false spying charges, and was imprisoned when her daughter was just one year old.
During a press conference following her release, Nazanin was dignified and restrained as she voiced her disappointment at the failure of the UK Foreign Office, criticising them for taking too long to free her.
“I have seen five foreign secretaries change over the course of six years, that is unprecedented,” she began. “I was told many times, ‘We're going to get you home’, and that never really happened."
“How many foreign secretaries does it take to get someone home? Five. What happened now should have happened six years ago,” Nazanin added.
While she thanked those who helped secure her release, some thought she should have shown more gratitude toward the government, and took to Twitter to call her an “ungrateful cow”, which then began trending on the social media site.
BBC Breakfast host Naga took a screenshot of Twitter's trending topics, which had “#ungratefulcow” at the top, and shared her disbelief over the cruel hashtag.
“Wow,” she simply wrote.
Many of her 267,000 followers agreed with her, and echoed Naga’s shock at the cruel jibe.
“My god this makes me [angry emoji]. This is exactly why I watched the whole one hour interview. Nazanin, what a woman after all she has been through, I thought she was so strong and brave,” one wrote.
“So depressing, stupidly took a peek at the tweets with this hashtag and quickly wish I hadn’t,” another added.
“Absolutely revolted at the hostility she is receiving. She should have been free six years and five foreign secretaries ago,” one follower replied.
“Why should somebody wrongly imprisoned for 6 years be grateful when released? It's like being grateful when the bully stops hitting you,” one fumed.
