In 2019, India attempted to land a spacecraft on the Moon – and ended up painting a kilometres-long streak of debris on its barren surface. Now the Indian Space Research Organisation has returned in triumph, with the Chandrayaan-3 lander successfully touching down near the south pole of Earth’s rocky neighbour.

India made history as the first country to land near the south pole of the Moon with its Chandrayaan-3 lander on Aug. 23, 2023. This also makes it the first country to land on the Moon since China in 2020.

India is finally on the Moon. It took an arduous journey of years, a failed mission and a voyage of 40 days for Chandrayaan-3 to be the first to arrive on the Moon’s dark side or south pole on Wednesday. But why at all are we there?
