U.S. weather disasters are getting costlier as more people move into vulnerable areas and climate change raises the risks of extreme heat and rainfall, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration warned as it released its annual billion-dollar disasters report on Jan. 10, 2023.

MIAMI — South Florida has always been hot, rainy and vulnerable to hurricanes. So it’s understandable that some longtime residents remain skeptical that climate change is doing anything to make the region’s age-old problems any worse.

A massive hurricane, a historic drought and 16 other major disasters across the U.S. collectively racked up $165 billion in damages and killed at least 474 people in 2022, according to a National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration analysis published Tuesday.

JPMorgan Chase CEO Jamie Dimon says he shouldn't have used the word "hurricane" to describe what lies ahead for the U.S. economy last year, but adds that there still are "storm clouds" and "heightened uncertainty."
