New York (AFP) - Shares of Delta Air Lines tumbled Wednesday as swelling costs pressured quarterly earnings, despite persistently robust demand that so far appears resilient amid inflation. 

Delta Air Lines (NYSE: DAL) came out with quarterly earnings of $1.44 per share, missing the Zacks Consensus Estimate of $1.71 per share. This compares to loss of $1.07 per share a year ago. These figures are adjusted for non-recurring items.

Delta Air Lines on Wednesday said it will halt flight growth for the remainder of the year despite surging demand to avoid mass cancellations that have plagued the carrier so far this summer.

Issuing a 7700 squawk code to alert air traffic officials of the issue on board, the Delta aircraft was quickly re-diverted from its original destination of Boston.
