CHICAGO — After a two-year spike during the pandemic and national outrage over police accountability, Chicago has begun to see a decline in homicides, as the Chicago Police Department works to correct crime trends to levels before the coronavirus and turmoil over the killing of George Floyd took hold.

Here’s an issue-by-issue report card for 2022 on some of the topics examined over the year by the Editorial Board.

The man, 40, was in fair condition with gunshot wounds to the leg and buttocks, police said.

The City Council on Wednesday created a new transit tax increment financing district to bankroll about one-fourth — $959 million — of the cost of extending the CTA’s Red Line from 95th Street to 130th Street and building four new stations along the way.

Candidates often veered back to crime and public safety when answering questions on the CTA, businesses leaving the city and other matters at the forum, which was held on the Northwest Side.

It’s a potential win for the city — and we certainly could use a few Ws these days — as well as the South Side.

In November 2019, people trying to get to work or take weekend outings in Chicagoland crammed themselves onto the “L,” public buses and commuter trains at least 39.6 million times.

The primary opposition came from Budget Committee Chair Pat Dowell (3rd) and former longtime Transportation Committee Chairman Anthony Beale (9th), whose Far South Side constituents would benefit the most.
