CHICAGO — Masks mandates are ending in most of Chicago and Illinois Monday, but not in the state’s largest school district.

CHICAGO — Gov. J.B. Pritzker said new federal COVID-19 guidance unveiled Friday will allow the state of Illinois to remove its school mask mandate on Monday, coinciding with the halting of the hotly debated virus mitigation strategy for the general public.

While many applications are typically submitted within the last week of the window, district officials were pushing to spread awareness ahead of the deadline.

"I do predict there’ll be a day we can go mask optional," CPS CEO Pedro Martinez told the Board of Education at its meeting Wednesday. "And I would love that to happen before the end of the school year."
