The Australian Electoral Commission has paused a review into the Northern Territory's major conservative party, which was launched after the CLP's only sitting senator, Sam McMahon, quit the party.

More prominent Northern Territory conservatives have quit the Country Liberal Party, joining four other high profile members who've resigned in recent months.

Outgoing senator Sam McMahon last week used parliamentary privilege to accuse a former staffer of 'abuse'. The Country Liberal Party's president Fiona Darcy says "it's not a CLP issue".

The Country Liberal Party says laws in the Northern Territory need to be strengthened to better protect police and frontline workers, by locking up those who assault them. However, the government has criticised the move and is likely to vote it down.
