We certainly can’t force any of our fellow Chicagoans to fill out an electronic or paper ballot. But we can repeat ourselves and once again emphasize the importance of voting for our city’s future.

Whom residents select as mayor, members of City Council and of new police districts will shape how Chicago will move forward.

The heightened concerns over safety and political violence come two years after former President Donald Trump falsely blamed widespread fraud for his loss — a claim that fueled the riot at the U.S. Capitol and further polarized the political landscape.

Mayoral challenger Willie Wilson wants a federal judge to block a plan he said “reminds me of the Jim Crow days down South where I’m from.” But the Board of Elections was required to consolidate city precincts after new ward and district lines were drawn based on the 2020 census.

The two sites, which opened Friday, are at 191 N. Clark St. and on the sixth floor at 69 W. Washington St.

Mayoral candidate Willie Wilson argues it will confuse Chicago voters, depress turnout in the Nov. 8 general and Feb. 28 mayoral and aldermanic elections and “disparately impact racial and/or ethnic voting blocs.”

“Voters have other issues on their mind, kids are out of school for the summer or they’re planning vacations,” an election official said Thursday about the primaries that were pushed back until June 28 this year.

The primary election is June 28.
