SACRAMENTO, Calif. — Blazes have burned thousands of acres, cued mandatory evacuations and threatened some of the state’s oldest and most impressive trees, but far fewer acres have burned in California wildfires through the first few weeks of summer than at the same point last year.

SAN DIEGO — Nearly 200 firefighters were battling a brush fire on Sunday afternoon southeast of Otay Lake that had a moderate "rate of spread" and charred 60 acres of vegetation, Cal Fire officials said.

A brush fire near a small city in Shasta County, California, that prompted evacuation orders Thursday afternoon had destroyed multiple structures and was threatening more, officials said.
