Questions about cyber-attack dominate meeting as company says it is contacting 480,000 customers whose health claims were stolen

The Australian government is launching an offensive against cybercriminals, following a data breach that has exposed millions of people’s personal information.

Medibank’s boss says the company will begin directly communicating with nearly half a million customers whose health data is believed to have been stolen, weeks after it first became aware hackers had breached its customer database.

Health insurer Medibank says an ongoing cyber attack will result in pre-tax costs of between $25 million and $35 million.

The difference between a kidnap and the Medibank data breach is that kidnapping is usually non-preventable in that the victims are totally unaware of being the target of the crime.

Medibank remains steadfast in its refusal to pay a ransom to hackers who stole customer data, as the health insurer holds its annual general meeting.

First Optus, now Medibank; in less than two months we’ve experienced two of the largest personal data breaches in Australia’s history. In both cases the hackers attempted, and failed, to extort a ransom in exchange for not releasing personal data.
