University of Newcastle professor Alex Zelinsky will stay on for another four years as Vice-Chancellor after his contracted was extended to the end of 2028.
"I'm proud of what we have done together during my time and there is more to do," he said.
"I look forward to working with our excellent staff, students and partners to take our university forward in the years ahead."
The university's Chancellor Patricia Forsythe, AM announced professor Zelinsky's commitment and said the university has been achieving and delivering outstanding results under his leadership.
"Our global rankings have improved from 224 to 179, an improvement of almost 50 places and our student recruitment and retention is above target," she said.
From being recognised by the prime minister for as national leaders in enabling pathways to becoming the equal first university in the country to achieve an Athena Swan Silver Award and record philanthropic funding, she said the institution was "moving forward in the right way".
"The extension of the Vice-Chancellor's term will bring stability and accountability for the next exciting phase for our institution."
